Social Media CTAs: What to Ask For, and When

Match the Ask to the Post's Job, One Ask per Post, and Put Links Where They Work

Short answer

A social media call to action should match the job of the post. Reach posts ask for a follow or share, trust posts for a save or reply, conversion posts for one click. Use one ask per post, put links where the platform makes them clickable, and track each CTA with tagged links.

1. What is a social media call to action?

The one thing a post asks the reader to do next: reply, save, follow, click, book or buy. It can be a line of copy, a button, a sticker or a spoken line in a video.

Call to action (CTA)
The specific next step a piece of marketing asks its audience to take, such as replying, following, clicking a link, booking or buying.
Also known as: CTA

A CTA is not always a link. On social, the most valuable asks for a small account are often a reply or a save, because they cost the reader little and tell the platform the post was worth showing to more people.

2. What should a post ask for?

Something proportional to the post's job and the reader's relationship with you. A stranger seeing a tip will reply or follow; they will rarely buy. Ask for the next small step, not the last big one.

Click to learn"See the 40-second demo"ConversionClicks, landing page visits
Sign up, book or buy"Start a 14-day plan" or "Book a slot this week"Conversion, promotionsSign-ups, bookings, sales
The CTA ladder: what to ask for, when, and how to judge itExample lines come from an invented bookkeeping tool for freelancers. A "14-day plan" is part of the invented example, not a recommendation to offer one.

A useful rule of thumb: most posts in a month should use the lower rungs, and the top rung should appear on the posts built to carry it. The content mix guide covers how to set that balance from your own results.

3. Why only one call to action per post?

Because each extra ask splits attention and makes the post harder to measure. "Like, comment, share, follow and click the link" asks for five things and usually gets none.

One ask also forces a decision the team should be making anyway: what is this post for? If you cannot choose between "reply" and "click", the post is probably trying to do two jobs and would work better as two posts.

Can a post have a CTA and a link?

Yes, when the link is the CTA. What to avoid is a post that asks for a reply in the last line and also carries a link, because the link pulls readers off the platform before they reply. Pick the one that matches the post's job and leave the other for another post.

5. How do I write a CTA line that people act on?

Use a specific verb, say what the reader gets, remove the doubt that stops them, and make the page they land on say the same thing. Place it where the reader finishes, not where you finished writing.

  1. Use a specific verb. "Get the checklist", "book a Tuesday slot", "reply with your number". "Learn more" and "check it out" tell the reader nothing about what happens next.
  2. Say what they get. The outcome of the click, in their terms: "the 5-minute setup", "the price list", "the template we use". A reason to act beats an instruction to act.
  3. Remove the main doubt. One short phrase that answers the worry: "no card needed", "takes two minutes", "free to download". Only use the ones that are true.
  4. Place it where the reader ends. Last line in a text post, final slide of a carousel, spoken and on screen at the end of a video. For long posts, a softer mention near the top can help as well.
  5. Match the landing page. The page should repeat the promise of the CTA in its headline. A "free checklist" CTA that lands on a pricing page loses most of its clicks and all of its trust.

WeakStrongerWhy
"Learn more at the link!""See the 40-second setup video (link in profile)"Specific outcome, honest about where the link is
"Let us know what you think!""Which of these three would you fix first? Reply with 1, 2 or 3"An answer anyone can give in two seconds
"Sign up today!""Send your first invoice today. No card needed"Outcome plus the main doubt removed
"Like and share!""Save this for when your next invoice is late"A reason to save, tied to a real moment

6. How do I know which CTAs work?

Tag the calendar row with the CTA type, measure each type on its own metric, and use UTM-tagged links so clicks and sign-ups show up by channel and post in your analytics.

Compare like with like. A reply CTA should be judged on replies per post against other reply CTAs, not against a click CTA on clicks. After two or three months you will know which asks your audience answers on each channel, which is worth more than any general rule.

Key Takeaways

Match the ask to the post's job

Reach posts ask for follows and shares, trust posts for saves and replies, conversion posts for one click.

Ask for the next small step

Strangers reply or follow; they rarely buy from one post. Save the top of the ladder for posts built for it.

One ask per post

Multiple asks split attention and make the result impossible to read.

Instagram caption links are not clickable

Use profile links and Story link stickers, and say honestly where the link is.

Specific verb, clear outcome, one doubt removed

"Send your first invoice today, no card needed" beats "Sign up today!"

Judge each CTA type on its own metric

Replies for reply asks, saves for save asks, tagged clicks and sign-ups for link asks.
